Sai Wan Jetty, Cheung Chau is located at Cheung Chau in Islands District. Currently, there is a kaito service plying between Cheung Chau Public Pier and Sai Wan Jetty. Tourists could walk along the Cheung Chau Family Trail towards the Jetty. The insufficient water depth of the existing pier makes berthing only available for small vessel. It doesn’t meet the current needs and achieve sustainability, for example, it lacks barrier-free facilities. Meanwhile, residents also request berthing facilities for dragon boat.
Key design considerations for this pier improvement project includes extending pier head to appropriate water depth, providing adequate water depth for berthing, improving boarding and access facilities, such as adapting a ramp and a floating platform, and adding landing platforms along the steps which connect to the pier ground by a ramp to facilitate boarding and alighting of passengers, improving the waiting area in terms of comfort and safety by providing new facilities, such as a pier cover and seats.
We need to enhance the structural safety and landing facilities of Sai Wan Jetty, Cheung Chau, and avoid impact on the ecological environment. The consultation to relevant stakeholders will be conducted. In response to the opinions obtained regarding the improvement works of Sai Wan Jetty, Cheung Chau, local needs and environmental impact, we have developed a preliminary design of the pier improvement works.
